This Club is instituted for the purpose of facilitating the social intercourse of those connected with, or interested in Art, Literature or Science."
Mariposa & Co. was founded by women of vision in order to provide a haven for those people who had professional or amateur relationships with the Arts, Literature or Sciences and it has provided this hospitality and friendship ever since.
The club recreates the regular routine of attendance at coffee houses during period of Enlightenment on an online platform. The coffee house during the period of enlightenment was where you could meet with scientists, explorers, writers, and philanthropists. During the course of the “long 18th century” (1685-1815) the coffeehouses were the engines of creation that helped drive the Enlightenment – the European intellectual movement of the time that emphasized reason and individualism rather than tradition.
In the course of its existence Mariposa & Co. has included amongst its members many outstanding figures in the history of art, literature and science, as well as an array of pre-eminent surgeons, solicitors and professionals. The principal areas of interest amongst the current members are: art, architecture, fashion, film, literature, music, performance, photography, science, theatre and media. It proudly continues to be a hub for creative and entrepreneurial patrons to come together to meet and exchange ideas.
Mariposa & Co.'s art collection remains at its very core, highlighting international trends, as well as maintaining a focus on British-Chinese based artists. The art works include a combination of site-specific installations and carefully selected acquisitions. The permanent collection sits alongside both the Club's historic collection and a series of temporary exhibitions which change throughout the year.
Mariposa & Co. assists the growth of individuals by implementing the desire for self-fashioning and self-development which commands the notion of human reason. We connect individuals from various backgrounds to evolve their talents.
